Abstract

The Holy Quran talks in a broad way concerning struggling against one’s devilish soul. It touches upon the human being’s physical, spiritual, material, intellectual, and emotional aspects of life in the guise of such topics as (’ins?n) human being, (nafs) soul, (?aql) intellect, (r?h) spirit, and (qalb) heart, leading up to important lessons in human psychology. In a nutshell, it can be said that the human being is bidimensional in that s/he is composed of a physical-psychological complex, accordingly benefiting from a material as well as spiritual life. In his or her material life, the human being is like animals, a type of life which the Holy Quran regards as “worldly life” that the short-sighted and men of oblivion make it their concern and reflect on it. On the other hand, the superior, spiritual life which is designated in the Holy Quran as “hay?tan tayyiba” (a goodly life), the ultimate goal. Not everybody can achieve this kind of life, rather its attainment is left to the pious and good-doers
