Education as an Important Thing That Sharia is Not Satisfied to Leave

Abstract

Education is inherently a value-oriented institution, whose importance varies across different political and social paradigms. Contemporary debates often focus on its institutional status and the extent of state involvement in educational affairs. This article seeks to explore the position of education within the system of Islamic Sharia rulings, adopting a broad and foundational perspective. It examines the claim that education is a matter of such importance that Sharia does not permit its neglect or abandonment. Accordingly, the study addresses the conceptual genealogy, theoretical foundations, and reasoning underlying this assertion. Employing descriptive, analytical, and inferential research methods, the study finds that the terms “matters that Sharia is not content to be neglected” and “important affairs” convey the same conceptual meaning, extending beyond limited examples such as health and public welfare. Based on the evidences presented, the study concludes that compulsory education—across all fields and age groups—is among the essential matters over which Sharia does not tolerate neglect. It also identifies specific applications, including:Mandatory education for minors lacking supervision or proper guidanceEducation as a collective and disciplinary duty shared by families, governments, scholars, and the public, andEducation in the domain of moral and religious instruction—promoting good and prohibiting evil. These findings reinforce the conception of education as a Sharia-based necessity, underscoring its institutional and normative significance in Islamic jurisprudence.
